You can’t argue that synthetic treatment produces immediate and very visible results. Heavy applications of synthetic control substances knock out weeds fast and make lawn visibly green and top thick quickly.
Unfortunately, this solution produces a lawn as addicted to synthetic treatment as people can become addicted to heavy drugs, with similar consequences. While seemingly healthy on top, the soil dies quickly underneath, root structures disappear because deep roots become unnecessary, and the lawn demands as much water as it can get.
Your lawn becomes more addicted over time, requiring more treatments, more water, and higher costs. To much fertilizer can burn it out quickly and necessitate re-sodding.
Some companies claim that some of their materials are certified human friendly by Health Canada. But if it kills other organisms, its likely not good for us either. At one time people thought DDT was safe, now it is banned around the world.
