For more than 20 years, Tim and Susan Penstone have had their hands in soil; growing high quality produce for their family, friends and local markets. Well before the current popularity of heirloom crops, the Penstones cultivated organic specialty crops like banana potatoes and arugula much to the delight of local European trained chefs. Their pursuit for flavorful, sustainable and healthy food led them to the work of agricultural science pioneers such as Rudolph Steiner, William Albrecht, George Washington Carver, John Jeavons, Elaine Ingham and Tom Selvig. Add to the mix Tim’s background in organic chemistry and Susan’s in herbology and food nutrition, EnviroPerfect Solutions emerged to raise awareness about the importance of biologically diverse soils for the health of humans and all life on the planet.
Glen Brown’s curiosity and love for soils early in his career led him to the Amish community. Their patient tutoring and philosophy on soil husbandry and agriculture is the foundation of Glen’s approach to compost making: organization, cleanliness and patience. Glen’s story includes 16 years of practical field experience making compost and we are so blessed to have him on our team!
In addition to this work, Tim and Susan also founded Voices of the Soil (www.voicesofthesoil.org) to encourage folks to connect in a personal way with soil through a variety of community initiatives. Fifteen years of community work has influenced the creation of more than 75 community projects such as community gardens, youth environmental programs, and Cityfarm; locally and worldwide.
